The National Instruments VXI-MXI interface is a C-size class mainframe extender for the VXIbus. Address mapping is used to translate bus cycles on the VXIbus system to the MXIbus and vice versa. The VXIbus architecture is extended outside its mainframe when using the VXI-MXI card. When equipped with a VXI-MXI interface, a VXIbus mainframe can be connected to other MXIbus devices. These devices include MXIbus instruments, VXIbus mainframes or MXIbus-equipped personal computers.

Multiple VXIbus mainframes can be connected to form a single multi-frame system when using VXI-MXI interfaces. An external PC can also be connected. This set-up makes the PC appear to be embedded on a VXIbus module that is plugged into the VXIbus mainframe.

The VXI-MXI interface is housed in a metal enclosure which improves EMI performance and provides easy handling. The metal enclosure also includes cut-outs around the switches and jumpers making it possible to change settings without removing the card.
