The National Instruments GPIB-VXI/C allows a GPIB-equipped computer to control message-based VXI instruments through the GPIB-VXI/C interface. Similar to how it controls GPIB instruments. The GPIB-VXI/C is a Slot 0 Resource Manager module that connects the IEEE 488 bus and the VXIbus by converting GPIB signals and protocols to VXIbus signals and protocols.

The GPIB-VXI/C's firmware gives it the ability to control VXI instruments from the GPIB interface. Installation of the GPIB-VXI/C module is in the Slot 0 location of the VXI mainframe. The GPIB cable connects the GPIB controller to the front panel of the GPIB-VXI/C. When started, the VXI mainframe is initialized by the GPIB-VXI/C through the VXI Resource Manager operations.
