Automotive radar validation requires a complete signal chain. Separate the radar operating band from the frequency range of each generator, analyzer, transceiver and converter in the test system.

RF instruments and the radar band

The NI PXIe-5840 is a vector signal transceiver with a frequency range extending to 6 GHz and up to 1 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth. It is not a standalone 76–81 GHz generator. Testing in a 76–81 GHz radar band requires appropriate millimeter-wave generation, analysis or frequency conversion.

When a lower-frequency PXI instrument is part of a millimeter-wave system, check the supported intermediate-frequency range and the converter or radar-test hardware. Compatibility must be established from the specific hardware and software documentation.

Plan the signal chain

  • Stimulus: define the waveform, operating band, bandwidth and power at the device under test.
  • Conversion: select documented up/downconversion when required; account for local oscillators, filtering and unwanted conversion products.
  • Measurement: check analyzer bandwidth, dynamic range, triggering and the signal presented at its input.
  • Connections: characterize cables, antennas, fixtures and paths used for conducted or over-the-air measurements.
  • Control: include the relevant ECU interfaces, power sequencing and test limits.

LabVIEW and test sequencing

LabVIEW or another supported instrument-control environment can coordinate configuration, waveform transfer, triggering, result logging and pass/fail decisions. Confirm driver and operating-system support for every device before choosing the software stack.

Hardware-in-the-loop and radar-target simulation require capabilities beyond simply connecting a generator and analyzer. Define the required delay, Doppler behavior, targets and update timing, then verify that the selected system supports those requirements.

Commissioning checklist

  • Record the exact model, part number and software version of each instrument and converter.
  • Verify the frequency plan and bandwidth at every stage of the chain.
  • Check input limits, losses and expected signal levels before connecting the device under test.
  • Validate timing, reference-clock distribution and synchronization using documented procedures.
  • Record the measurement setup and calibration or characterization used to interpret results.
