Select a PXI chassis around the complete instrument configuration: modules, controller, software and operating environment. Slot count alone does not establish compatibility or measurement performance.
PXI and PXIe use different data paths
Conventional 32-bit, 33 MHz PCI-based PXI has a theoretical shared-bus bandwidth of about 132 MB/s. PXI Express uses PCI Express links; its available bandwidth depends on the chassis topology, controller and module links. Neither a headline system bandwidth nor a PCIe generation guarantees sustained application throughput.
Check the controller/chassis compatibility matrix and each peripheral slot type. A hybrid peripheral slot can support compatible PXI hybrid-slot-compatible modules as well as PXIe modules. Do not assume every legacy PXI module fits every hybrid slot.
Build a configuration checklist
- Slots: distinguish the system-controller slot, timing slot and peripheral slots; account for modules occupying multiple positions.
- Data movement: trace each instrument through the backplane switches and controller link to memory or storage.
- Power: compare individual supply-rail requirements and total load with the exact chassis specifications.
- Cooling: check each module’s requirements and the chassis operating conditions, including fan settings, airflow clearances and ambient temperature.
- Synchronization: verify the required reference clocks and trigger routes across the selected modules and slots.
Avoid blanket sizing rules
An average calculated by dividing total module power by slot count can hide an overloaded or inadequately cooled position. Likewise, a fixed power reserve, cable-length limit or temperature derating percentage cannot replace the model-specific manual.
A remote-controller connection can be the throughput bottleneck. Verify the supported host interface, cable and adapter combination instead of assuming remote control always delivers the chassis headline bandwidth.
Identify the exact configuration before ordering
Use the model, hardware revision and installed options to locate the applicable manufacturer specifications. Confirm the ordering code with the supplier. Closely related chassis versions can differ; an unsourced part-number table is insufficient for compatibility approval.
Validate the complete system
Prepare a slot map and power budget, then test the required simultaneous acquisition and storage workload. Check controller and driver support before purchasing upgrades. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance and reference-clock calibration guidance where applicable.
