Installed in a host computer, the PCIe-8371 provides the host side of a cabled MXI-Express connection. The link is transparent to applications and drivers, allowing the computer to access connected PXI modules as PCI devices without additional link-specific programming.

A complete PXI Express connection requires a suitable host computer, an expansion chassis with the appropriate target board, and an MXI-Express x4 copper cable. NI's setup guide identifies the PXIe-8370 as a supported chassis-side target for the PCIe-8371.
