Moving a test system to continuous operation requires planning for its operating environment, software recovery, service access and spare equipment. Continuous uptime cannot be guaranteed from a generic MTBF figure or a model name.
Use model-specific power and cooling information
Check the chassis manual, populated modules and rack installation. Preserve the specified intake and exhaust clearances, use the documented cooling settings and account for the heat load of the installed equipment. For a PXIe-1085, consult the chassis manual for the actual installation and cooling requirements.
Inspect the airflow path and use slot blockers or other airflow accessories only as specified for the system. Choose inspection and service intervals from the manufacturer’s guidance and operating conditions, rather than a universal fan-replacement schedule.
Monitor what the system actually exposes
Record available temperatures, alarms, software errors and test interruptions. Fan and power telemetry depend on the hardware and its supported APIs. Establish a baseline for the assembled system and investigate changes rather than relying on a single fixed threshold for every chassis.
Plan recovery and service
- Back up the validated software, configuration, license information and recovery instructions.
- Define a safe state for the device under test when communication or a measurement fails.
- Test restart and recovery procedures during planned downtime.
- Maintain identified spares and record their model, configuration and acceptance checks.
- Perform module or fan replacement according to the applicable service procedure; do not assume hot-swap support.
Redundancy must be designed and validated for the equipment and electrical connections involved. Do not connect SMU outputs in parallel or assume interchangeable modules merely to create redundancy.
Interpret MTBF correctly
MTBF is a statistical reliability measure under stated assumptions, not an expected service life for an individual unit. NI cautions that a device MTBF figure is not a reliable predictor of actual failure frequency in a particular installation. For operational planning, also record actual failures, operating time and recovery time.
