Overview

Product overview

Key product information and technical features.

Installed in the host computer rather than the instrumentation chassis, the PCIe-8361 extends the computer's PCI Express connection to a remote system. NI describes the link as transparent to applications and device drivers.

NI lists connections to the PXI-8360 for PXI systems and the PXIe-8360 for PXI Express systems. Select the chassis-side interface and MXI cable for the intended system rather than relying on connector appearance alone.

  • Single copper MXI-Express x1 port for remote system connection.
  • PCI Express host connection rather than a conventional PCI host connection.
  • Supports physical separation of the host computer and instrumentation chassis.

FAQ

Product-specific questions

Product-specific answers based on available technical information.

Is the PCIe-8361 installed in the computer or the PXI chassis?

It is the host-side PCI Express card installed in the computer. The remote chassis uses a corresponding chassis-side MXI interface.

How does the PCIe-8361 differ from the PCIe-8362?

NI lists one copper MXI-Express x1 port for the PCIe-8361 and two for the PCIe-8362. Both use a PCI Express x1 host interface.

Does software transparency mean no system software is needed?

No. NI describes the bridge as transparent to device drivers, but specifies PXI Platform Services for full PXI/PXI Express functionality, including chassis identification, trigger routing and slot detection.

Can the external connector be treated as a generic cabled PCI Express port?

No. NI states that the MXI-Express x1 external port is not compatible with the PCI-SIG cabled PCI Express specification.
