Start an RF generator comparison with the waveform your test requires. A vector signal generator, an analog source and a local-oscillator module perform different jobs. Sharing a frequency range does not make them interchangeable.
Three examples with different roles
| Model | Instrument class | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Keysight N5172B EXG | Vector RF signal generator; configurations cover 9 kHz to 3 GHz or 6 GHz. | Installed frequency option, baseband capability, modulation bandwidth and waveform licenses. |
| Rohde & Schwarz SMB100B | Analog signal generator. RF versions offer upper frequency limits of 1, 3 or 6 GHz; separate microwave configurations extend higher. | Frequency and analog-modulation options. Do not specify this model as a standalone arbitrary I/Q waveform generator. |
| NI PXIe-5653 | Synthesizer/local-oscillator source module used in supported modular instrument configurations. | The complete instrument configuration and required interconnections. It is not interchangeable with a standalone vector signal generator. |
Match the source to the test
For a continuous-wave stimulus, begin with frequency coverage, level accuracy and spectral purity. For Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or another digitally modulated signal, also specify the exact waveform, bandwidth and required software. A model name alone does not confirm that a particular unit can generate the waveform.
Compare phase-noise values only under matching carrier-frequency, offset-frequency and operating conditions. Check whether each number is specified or typical. A single output-power value also does not describe performance throughout the entire frequency range.
Request a configuration-specific quotation
Record the installed hardware options, software licenses, accessories and calibration documentation. Ask for a quotation against that configuration; a generic price or an unverified ordering code is not a reliable purchasing specification.
For modular systems, include the supported chassis, controller and driver versions in the equipment list. Browse our Wireless Design & Test equipment or send your test requirements.
