The VXI-MXI-2 provides the mainframe-side interface in a MXI-2 system. NI's configuration guide describes connecting an external PCI-MXI-2 or AT-MXI-2 controller to multiple mainframe extenders, as well as expanding an embedded-controller VXI system to additional mainframes.

Installation depends on the system topology. NI documents Slot 0 installation for externally controlled mainframes and non-Slot 0 installation alongside an embedded controller. Logical addresses, cable orientation, and bus-timeout settings must be coordinated for the selected configuration.

Must the VXI-MXI-2 always be installed in Slot 0?

No. NI documents Slot 0 installation in externally controlled mainframes and non-Slot 0 installation in a mainframe with an embedded VXI controller. The module detects Slot 0 automatically by default; follow the instructions for the selected topology.

Does the VXI-MXI-2 provide automatic cable termination?

Yes. NI states that the VXI-MXI-2 automatically terminates the MXIbus cable when it is the last device in the cable chain.

How is the VXI logical address configured?

The logical address is set using DIP switches. Required addresses depend on the topology; use the corresponding configuration example in NI's multiple-mainframe guide.
