Overview

Product overview

Key product information and technical features.

The NI-9853 adds high-speed CAN communication to CompactRIO systems through a C Series module interface. It is intended for low-level control, triggering, and byte-level CAN frame manipulation using the LabVIEW FPGA Module and NI-RIO software.

Each CAN port is isolated from the other port and from other modules in the system. CAN0 is internally powered, while CAN1 requires an external supply connected through its VSUP pin. This difference is important when wiring and commissioning a two-port application.

  • Two independent CAN ports with isolation between ports and from other system modules.
  • CAN 2.0B-compatible controllers support both 11-bit and 29-bit identifiers.
  • ISO 11898-compatible high-speed CAN transceivers support communication up to 1 Mbps.
  • LabVIEW FPGA access supports low-level CAN frame manipulation and custom control logic.

FAQ

Product-specific questions

Product-specific answers based on available technical information.

Does the NI-9853 work with CompactDAQ?

No. NI identifies the NI-9853 as a CompactRIO module, not a CompactDAQ interface.

Why does CAN1 need a separate power connection?

CAN1 requires an external +8 to +25 V supply at its VSUP connection on pin 9. CAN0 is internally powered and does not require this external supply.

Can the NI-9853 operate in Scan Mode?

No. NI-985x modules use FPGA mode. An FPGA application can pass CAN data to the real-time controller through a FIFO.

What CAN identifiers and bit rates does the NI-9853 support?

Its CAN 2.0B-compatible controllers support 11-bit and 29-bit identifiers, with high-speed CAN communication up to 1 Mbps.
