The PXI-2800 provides the carrier infrastructure for a modular NI SwitchBlock matrix. Relay cards install into the carrier, and the shared analog bus provides connections between cards rather than requiring every inter-card connection to be externally wired.

Side expansion connectors support linking additional carriers using NI 2806 expansion bridges. The carrier is not a standalone switch: system planning must account for the selected SwitchBlock cards and the required chassis slot arrangement.

Does the PXI-2800 perform switching without relay cards?

No. It is a carrier, not a standalone switch, and requires SwitchBlock modules to perform switching.

Can the PXI-2800 be installed in a PXI Express chassis?

NI's getting-started guide permits installation in an NI PXI Express chassis with suitable hybrid slots, provided the carrier's back connector connects to a PXI peripheral slot. Verify the chassis slot layout rather than assuming every PXI Express slot is suitable.

Is an NI 2806 expansion bridge required?

Not for every installation. The NI 2806 is an optional accessory used to expand connections between SwitchBlock carriers.
